Trauma
Understanding trauma better
Imagine a deeply distressing or disturbing event – something that overwhelms your ability to cope. This could be a single incident like an accident or assault, or a series of events like ongoing abuse or neglect. Trauma isn't just about the event itself, but rather about the lasting impact it has on your mind, body, and spirit.
When faced with overwhelming threat, our natural "fight, flight, or freeze" response kicks in to protect us. However, when this response is intensely activated and isn't fully processed, it can get "stuck" in our nervous system. This can lead to a range of persistent difficulties, including:
- PTSD and complex PTSD
- Anxiety and Depression
- Dissociation
- Self-harm
- Substance misuse
- Eating disorders
- Physical pain/ Migraines
- Cardiovascular disease
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Irritable bowel syndrome
Traumatic events can include;
- Natural disasters
- Accidents
- Physical/Sexual assault
- Emotional abuse
- Bullying
- Neglect
- Witnessing violence
- War
- Sudden loss of a loved one
Essentially, trauma leaves a lasting imprint, changing how your brain and body respond to stress and perceived threats. It can feel like the past is constantly intruding on the present.
The good new is... therapy can help.
